Stress Echocardiogram

A test using ultrasound imaging to show how efficiently your heart muscle is working as it pumps blood through your body. It is mainly used to detect a decrease in blood flow to the heart from narrowing in the coronary arteries.

This test may be ordered if you:

  • Have new symptoms of angina or chest pain.
  • Have worsening angina symptoms.
  • Have recently had a heart attack.
  • Are going to have surgery or begin a new exercise program.
  • Have heart valve problems.

A stress test can:

  • Diagnose coronary artery disease.
  • Determine overall function of the heart
  • Determine if treatment is working or changes are needed.

Resting Echocardiogram

The echocardiogram is also referred to as a cardiac echo or an echo, and is a sonogram of the heart. Echocardiography uses sound waves to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional images of the heart. Doppler ultrasound is used to evaluate the heart valves and the flow of blood. Echocardiography is one of the most widely used diagnostic tests in cardiology; it is noninvasive and has no known risks or side effects.

The echocardiogram:

  • Measures the size of the heart chambers and thickness of the heart muscle.
  • Shows whether the heart is pumping efficiently or is weakened.
  • Can help determine whether the various parts of the heart pump equally.
  • Determines whether the heart valves function normally.
  • Gives insight to determine if a valve is narrowed or leaking and grades the severity of the valve problem.
  • Detects the presence of fluid around the heart, blood clots, masses inside the heart, and abnormal holes between heart chambers.
  • Can be combined with exercise or medications to see how well the heart functions during stress.
