Obstetrics & Gynecology

Ravalli County Women’s Health Services

Regular visits to the gynecologist are key to maintain health and well-being well into your later years. While every woman should meet with their gynecologist at least once a year for a routine exam, every patient is unique, and most patients do not require a full repeat of tests and screenings during every exam. After evaluating your family’s medical history and risk factors, your gynecologist at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital can work with you to create a customized schedule that addresses the medical factors most relevant to you.

The OB/GYNs of Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital cultivate relationships with patients so that we can create an efficient, comfortable experience. Whether you need a routine exam, gynecological surgery, or help preparing for pregnancy, our team will treat you with respectful, compassionate, and discrete service.

Exams & When to Get Them

As mentioned above, your experience at the gynecologist may vary year to year depending on your condition and risk factors. The following are the most common exams performed at the gynecologist office and how often a woman without any risk factors typically receives them:

  • General Pelvic Exams – You should receive a general exam once a year to discuss any questions or concerns you have for your gynecologist. Basic screening procedures are non-invasive and can be done without much preparation.
  • Breast Exams – Starting from age 25, you should have a breast exam at least once every three years, not counting your monthly self-exams. Breast cancer risk increases once you reach age 40, and most physicians will recommend an exam every one to two years.
  • Pap Smear – Women between the ages of 21 and 30 should have a Pap smear once every three years. By age 30, many doctors scale it back to every five years. At age 65, your risk of cervical cancer decreases, and your doctor may recommend you stop having them entirely.

Remember that these are not set timelines for gynecological exams, and your personal medical history plays a significant role in how often you should receive an exam. During your first appointment with us, we will discuss your situation with you and come up with a plan that fits your needs and personal preferences.
