Generous youth contributed stuffed animals, polar fleece blankets and money
to Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital on Tuesday adding to the excitement of
National Hospital Week.
John Shupert and Gracie Smith brought approximately 30 blankets that were
formed by 40 4-H members in Ravalli County.
Shupert, 16, said the youth members made nearly 100 blankets to divide
between the hospital, Emma’s House and Ravalli County Sheriff’s
Department.
“We want kids to get comforted and we enjoy giving away comfort blankets,”
he said. “I know I’ve been in here a lot and a blanket would
have gone a long way in comforting me. I’ve been here more times
than I should have.”
Smith said the fabric was donated by Bitterroot Quilters Guild members,
JoAnn’s Fabric, Walmart and caring individuals. All 24 4-H clubs
in the valley met in a big work session to create the blankets which are
two pieces of polar fleece tied together with about a 4-dozen large knots
all the way around each one.
Smith said her job was to select the fabric and spread the word about the project.
She said she participated to help others.
“I’ve been in the hospital a lot and this ER before,”
she said. “I enjoy being able to help other kids who end up in the
hospital. I know whenever you get something it helps – it helps
distract and it helps comfort.”
